ALASDAIR NIVEN

Alasdair Niven: Bridging Worlds Through Art

Scottish-born artist Alasdair Niven's career is a testament to his deep-seated exploration of both the physical and metaphysical worlds. His academic foundation, laid with a B.A. Hons in Fine Art from Grays School of Art, Aberdeen (1993), was further enriched by the prestigious John Kinross Scholarship in Florence, Italy.

Over three decades, Alasdair has refined his artistic vision, now drawing inspiration from the hometown of his wife, Kim, in Stawell, Victoria, Australia, where they have lived since 2022. Surrounded by the natural grandeur of the Grampians, he has carved a niche for himself within the local art community.

Alasdair's career is marked by significant contributions to the visual arts and has seen him showcasing his artwork across the UK and Europe. His diverse experiences range from serving as an installation officer at the Demarco European Art Foundation (DEAF) in Edinburgh to co-founding Phactory, an art/design partnership, and managing a dynamic live music venue on the Isle of Skye.

Originally trained in printmaking, Alasdair's practice is deeply rooted in observation, process, and drawing. The knowledge and skills he has acquired have allowed him to blend traditional techniques and materials with the use of technology, the sketchbook and iPad his constant companions.

"Mine Over Dark Matter," his third Australian exhibition, is a profound exploration of the interface between reality and imagination. It delves into the mysteries of dark matter, weaving together the folklore of his beloved Isle of Skye and the cutting-edge scientific research being undertaken in Stawell.

Through his art, Alasdair narrates not just a journey across continents but also a quest for discovery and self-reflection, capturing the essence of exploration and the enduring spirit of inquiry.
